Job Summary:

Based on-site in Montgomery, AL, you’ll lead PLC programming and SCADA delivery for a mission-critical controls project, from design through commissioning and turnover. You’ll own complex project tasks, interface daily with the client and subcontractors, and provide technical leadership to the Thermo team. You are comfortable taking ultimate responsibility for assigned work, proactively coordinating scope, schedule, and quality, and supporting adjacent projects as needed.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or other pertinent curriculum combined with relevant technical experience.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of total controls/automation experience.
  • Proven Track Record: 3+ years as Control Systems Project Engineer I (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in PLC programming and SCADA/HMI development (e.g., Rockwell/Studio 5000, Modicon/Control Expert, Siemens; AVEVA System Platform, Ignition, or similar).

Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical Responsibilities:

  • Lead, train, and mentor co-workers during start-up and commissioning of systems.
  • Read and interpret P&IDs, control narratives, and wiring diagrams; reconcile field conditions vs. drawings and drive redlines/as-builts.
  • Develop, test, and deploy PLC logic (ladder, structured text, function blocks) and SCADA/HMI graphics, alarms, historian tags, and reports.
  • Apply and guide others in the company’s Quality Management System (QMS), including design reviews, FAT/SAT, and commissioning checkouts.
  • Independently design complex control systems, including I/O lists, cause-and-effect matrices, and control sequences.
  • Specify instrumentation for complex control systems; value-engineer specifications for cost-effective, reliable solutions.
  • Lead detailed IT/OT architecture as it relates to control system integration (networks, servers/VMs, cybersecurity best practices).
  • Design distributed HMI/SCADA systems and integrate third-party vendor equipment via BACnet/Modbus/OPC UA where applicable.

Project Responsibilities:

  • Complete assigned tasks accurately, on schedule, and under budget.
  • Lead individual project-related tasks and/or small to mid-sized projects in their entirety; act as the customer’s main point of contact when assigned to lead.
  • Assume ultimate responsibility for successful completion of assigned work on schedule and under budget.
  • Identify and communicate changes in scope to overall projects and/or tasks.
  • Provide support on other projects or tasks led by others; delegate and manage tasks to meet cost and schedule goals.
  • Anticipate customer needs; accurately estimate task duration and complexity; manage risks and mitigation plans.
  • Complete assigned tasks accurately, on schedule, and under budget.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Where applicable, directs and oversees junior or subordinate staff members regarding construction, operations, and/or maintenance tasks and assignments at a project site.

Required Skills and Abilities:

In addition to Control Systems Project Engineer II skills and abilities:

  • Monitor progress and results of work; adapt to changing customer demands.
  • Show willingness to take on challenges; maintain composure during tense situations.
  • Build meaningful relationships; continue developing technical and leadership skills.
  • Strong hands-on PLC/SCADA troubleshooting during commissioning and start-up.

Travel required:

  • Overnight travel may be required up to 25%
  • Primary work location: Montgomery, Alabama (onsite).
  • Relocation: Temporary living allowance available for short-term relocation; permanent relocation assistance available.

On Call:

  • On call rotation participation may be required based on location and client needs.

Work Authorization/Other Requirements:

  • Proof of eligibility to work in the country where the position is located is required.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Fit for Duty at all times
