Job Summary:

• Own PLC software delivery for design-led projects from standards definition through FAT/SAT and turnover.
• Develop structured, reusable logic and templates for Schneider Electric (e.g., Modicon M580/M340 with EcoStruxure Control Expert/Unity Pro) and Rockwell Automation (e.g., ControlLogix/CompactLogix with Studio 5000 Logix Designer).
• Collaborate with project managers, SCADA engineers, and field teams to ensure designs meet functional requirements, quality standards, and commissioning timelines.
• Contribute to (and enforce) coding standards, code reviews, version control, simulation, and test plans.
• Provide engineering support to projects led by others; lead defined workstreams end-to-end when assigned.
• Report into the Design Program and operate as part of a larger remote team.

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor of Science; Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
• Typically, 7+ years total experience with 5+ years PLC programming preferred.
• Proven track record as a Control Systems Project Engineer I (or equivalent) delivering PLC/HMI solutions at scale.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical Responsibilities:

• Design and implement PLC applications using IEC 61131-3 languages (LD, FBD, ST, SFC).
• Build and maintain standardized code libraries, AOIs/DFBs, naming conventions, and diagnostics.
• Read/interpret P&IDs, wiring diagrams, cause-and-effect matrices, and control narratives; reconcile field conditions vs. drawings.
• Specify instrumentation and I/O; value-engineer solutions for cost, maintainability, and reliability.
• Define and execute simulation/unit tests; support FAT/SAT and site turnover; document as-built code.
• Contribute to HMI/SCADA integration requirements and distributed architectures in collaboration with SCADA teammates.
• Apply Thermo’s QMS throughout design and verification, document deviations and corrective actions.
• Support related network/IT design decisions as they impact controls integration.
• Quality & Documentation: URS/FRS/DDS, ITPs, FAT/SAT scripts, turnover packages; lead peer/code reviews and enforce Thermo’s QMS.
• Performance & Reliability: Throughput profiling, alarm hygiene, historian strategy, HA/DR designs.
• Mentorship: Coach engineers on Ignition patterns, Python/Jython, SQL, and Thermo standards; promote Git workflows and disciplined issue closure.
• Commissioning Support: Provide remote support for L1–L3; coordinate with site teams for L4/L5/IST as needed.
• Experienced with Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) applications.
• Expert in understanding, practicing, and guiding others in the company’s Quality Management System (QMS).
• Firm understanding of complex control system design.
• Able to independently design complex control systems.
• Provide instrumentation specifications for complex control systems.
• Value engineer specifications to provide the most cost-effective solutions.
• Leads detailed design of Information Technology (IT) systems, network infrastructure, and computer system designs, as it relates to control system integration.
• Able to independently design distributed HMI systems.

• Communicate proactively and professionally; follow site standards; honor commitments; ensure clear, timely follow-ups.

Project Responsibilities:

Deliver designs accurately, on schedule, and under budget; maintain estimates/forecasts.

• Deliver assigned tasks accurately, on schedule, and under budget.
• Lead specific project workstreams or small/midsize efforts end-to-end when assigned; act as customer’s main contact for those scopes.
• Identify and document changes in scope; support change order development.
• Estimate task duration/difficulty; manage risks; help maintain a realistic schedule and budget for your scopes.
• Support other project teams as needed and help delegate/track work across contributors
• Lead individual project related tasks and/or small to mid-sized projects in their entirety.
• Assume the ultimate responsibility for the successful completion of those projects or tasks on schedule and under budget.
• Take on the role of the customer’s main contact on those projects that the employee is assigned to lead.
• Identify changes u scope to overall projects and/or tasks.
• Provide support on other projects or tasks that are scheduled to be led by others.
• Manage and delegate assigned tasks accurately, on schedule, and under budget.
• Understands and anticipates customer needs.
• Accurately estimates the duration and difficulty of tasks.
• Ensures the team adheres to a realistic schedule and budget.
• Ability to identify and manage risks.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• Where applicable, directs and oversees junior or subordinate staff members regarding construction, operations, and/or maintenance tasks and assignments at a project site.

Required Skills and Abilities:

• Inductive Automation Ignition — Gold Certification or ability to gain within 3 months (required)
• Expert across Ignition modules (Perspective/Vision, EAM, Tag Historian, Alarm, Reporting; SFC/Sepasoft a plus).
• Strong Python/Jython and SQL; comfortable with queries, procedures, and report datasets.
• Solid controls foundation: P&IDs, wiring, sequences of operation, PLC/HMI interaction.
• Networking/cyber basics: VLANs, firewalls, certificates, Windows/Linux servers, virtualization.
• Quality mindset: rigorous documentation, gated reviews, and design validation.
• Composed under pressure; adaptable, collaborative, and clear communicator; effective mentor.
