The Impact You’ll Make:
As a Principal Control Systems Engineer, you’ll be a hands-on technical leader and trusted expert who elevates multiple projects and teams at once. You’ll shape system architectures, raise engineering quality, mentor top talent, and partner with project leadership and business development to win and deliver complex work—safely, on schedule, and on budget.
What You’ll Do:
- Own complex designs: Lead development of control system architectures (PLC/SCADA/DDC), I/O design, network topologies, hardware & software submittals, FAT/SAT/commissioning documentation, and test plans.
- Raise the technical bar: Set and enforce design philosophies, coding standards, and procedures; champion Thermo’s Quality Management System (QMS) across teams.
- Lead across projects: Coordinate deliverables and resources across multiple simultaneous projects; collaborate closely with Project Managers to hit scope, cost, and schedule targets.
- Advise and influence: Serve as a technical consultant to leadership; translate complex engineering trade-offs into clear recommendations for internal and external stakeholders.
- Win the work: Partner with Business Development to craft compelling technical proposals, estimates, and presentations that align solutions with customer goals.
- Mentor & multiply: Coach engineers, share lessons learned, deliver impromptu training, and contribute actively to our senior technologist community.
- Champion customer success: Communicate proactively, follow site standards, honor commitments, and build long-term relationships through exceptional service.
- Drive continuous improvement: Innovate processes and tools to execute work more efficiently and safely; model positive, collaborative team culture.
Education and Experience:
- Education: B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent technical experience).
- Experience: 13+ years total, including 3+ years as a Senior Control Systems Engineer (or equivalent technical leadership).
- Credentials: Professional Engineer (PE) licensure and/or recognized industry certifications aligned to scope (e.g., ISA/IEC 62443, PMP, GAMP/GxP, or vendor platform certifications).
- Domain expertise (several of the following):
- PLC/SCADA/DDC platforms (e.g., Rockwell, Siemens, AVEVA/Wonderware, Ignition, Schneider)
- Open industrial protocols and data layers (BACnet, Modbus, OPC UA, SNMP) and robust network design.
- Commissioning leadership (Levels 1–5), FAT/SAT, start-up, and turnover on large capital projects.
- Mission Critical (data centers: BMS/EPMS, CRACs, chilled water, CDU/heat-recovery), District Energy (chilled water/steam/HX), or Life Sciences (GMP, 21 CFR Part 11, GAMP 5, IQ/OQ).
- Design coordination in BIM/VDC environments and high-quality as-builts/turnover packages.
- Leadership & soft skills: Calming presence under pressure, strong delegation and coaching, excellent stakeholder communication, and a track record of motivating teams while protecting schedule and budget.
Travel Required:
- Travel: Up to 50% overnight travel may be required.
- Work authorization: Proof of eligibility to work in the country of employment is required; valid driver’s license; fit for duty at all times.
