Commissioning Manager I – Data Centers

Location: Onsite in Leesburg, VA (Washington, D.C. surrounding area)
Employment Status: Full Time | Direct Hire
Compensation: $100,000 - $130,000 per year + Annual Bonus Eligibility
Travel: Relocation required within 6–8 months on assignment - relocation assistance may be available.

The Opportunity
The Commissioning Manager is responsible for leading industrial automation and control system projects from proposal development through commissioning and closeout.

This role oversees project planning, budgeting, scheduling, subcontractor coordination, and customer communication while ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget. You may lead multiple small-to-mid-sized projects or a single large, complex project and will collaborate closely with engineering teams, commissioning staff, subcontractors, and senior leadership.

This position is ideal for a technically grounded project manager who understands control systems design and field execution and thrives in dynamic, fast-paced project environments.

What You’ll Do

Core Responsibilities

• Manage control system projects from proposal through final closeout
• Develop and maintain project schedules, budgets, and forecasts
• Coordinate internal engineering, field teams, and subcontractors
• Oversee installation, startup, and commissioning activities
• Prepare scopes of work for subcontractors and manage subcontract performance
• Administer and negotiate change orders
• Review contracts and ensure compliance with project specifications
• Monitor project progress and proactively mitigate risks
• Provide accurate financial projections and reporting

Collaboration & Communication

• Serve as the primary point of contact for customers and trade partners
• Communicate proactively regarding schedule, scope, and budget updates
• Build and maintain strong client and contractor relationships
• Identify opportunities for additional services and project expansion
• Promote a collaborative and accountable team culture

Quality, Safety & Process

• Enforce adherence to Thermo Systems Quality Management System (QMS)
• Champion safety standards in office and field environments
• Ensure subcontractors meet quality and compliance expectations
• Review and proof project documentation for technical and contractual accuracy

What We’re Looking For

Education & Experience

• B.S. in Engineering or related technical discipline (or equivalent experience)
• 8+ years of relevant industry experience
• 3+ years of experience as a Project Manager in controls, automation, or industrial environments
• Proven experience managing project budgets, schedules, and subcontractors

Skills & Qualifications

• Strong technical background in control systems (PLC, HMI, SCADA preferred)
• Understanding of electrical and mechanical system integration
• Experience with industrial field execution and trade coordination
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and project management tools
• Ability to create and manage detailed project scopes and cost forecasts
• Strong risk identification and mitigation skills
• Effective decision-making in dynamic environments
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
• Ability to work independently with minimal oversight
• Valid driver’s license and authorization to work required
