Controls Technician III

Location: Onsite in East Windsor, NJ or Remote with significant travel
Term: Full Time | Direct Hire
Compensation: $80,000 - $100,000 Annually + Bonus Eligibility
Travel: Local candidates in the East Windsor, NJ area may travel up to 25%. Candidates outside of this area will require heavy travel.

The Opportunity

The Lead Control Systems Technician II provides advanced technical support and field leadership for control system projects and service teams. This role is highly hands-on and supports installation, startup, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of industrial control systems at customer sites.

This individual is expected to work independently, lead field activities when assigned, provide direction to junior technicians, and serve as a reliable technical resource for customers and project teams.

What You’ll Do

Technical & Field Execution

  • Lead and support control system installation, startup, and commissioning activities.
  • Perform and lead instrument loop checks, calibrations, and field verification.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair PLC, HMI, instrumentation, and related control system equipment.
  • Lead and perform Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).
  • Support startup and troubleshooting of PLC and HMI applications.
  • Wire instruments, control panels, and associated field devices.
  • Read and interpret P&IDs, wiring diagrams, and other technical documentation, and provide feedback when field conditions differ from drawings.
  • Apply an intermediate understanding of control system, electrical, mechanical, network, and computer system design as it relates to system integration.
  • Accurately document work performed and maintain required project and service records.
  • Follow established procedures and quality requirements through the company’s Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Continue building technical expertise through control systems certifications, training, and professional development.

Project & Team Leadership

  • Complete assigned work accurately, on schedule, and within budget.
  • Understand assigned scope and communicate issues, risks, or changes that fall outside of that scope.
  • Lead field activities and coordinate with project engineers, project managers, customers, and other stakeholders.
  • Direct and support junior technicians or other field personnel as needed during construction, operations, maintenance, and commissioning activities.
  • Where applicable, support technician scheduling and workload coordination to align with project and company priorities.
  • Take ownership of assigned responsibilities while seeking guidance when needed.

Customer Engagement

  • Communicate professionally, proactively, and respectfully with customers.
  • Follow customer-specific site standards, procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Provide responsive technical support and practical troubleshooting solutions.
  • Follow through on commitments and maintain clear communication throughout field activities.
  • Develop an understanding of customer needs and identify opportunities to provide additional support or services.

What We’re Looking For

Education & Experience

  • Associate in Applied Science, Associate in Science, or similar degree in Engineering Technology, Computer Information Systems Technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Typically 3–7+ years of relevant controls, automation, or field service experience.
  • 3+ years of experience as a Lead Control Systems Technician I or in a comparable technical role.

Technical Experience & Capabilities

  • Strong experience with installation, startup, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of industrial control systems.
  • Working knowledge of PLC and HMI applications, including startup and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with instrumentation, loop checks, calibration, control panel wiring, and field devices.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, wiring diagrams, and related technical documentation.
  • Understanding of control system, electrical, mechanical, and industrial network fundamentals.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and provide technical direction to others when needed.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage priorities, work efficiently, and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.

Travel & Other Requirements

  • Travel to customer sites may be required for installation, maintenance, commissioning, troubleshooting, and repair activities.
  • Participation in an on-call rotation may be required based on location and customer needs.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Maintain authorization to work in the country where the position is located.
  • Ability to meet applicable fit-for-duty requirements.
