The Opportunity

The Controls Systems Engineer III designs, integrates, documents, and supports automation and control systems for mission-critical facilities, with a focus on hyperscale and enterprise data centers. Approximately 70% of the role is office-based engineering and design, with 30% dedicated to site support, commissioning, troubleshooting, and hardware/network validation.

The CSE3 leads assigned engineering scopes, serves as a technical resource for customers and project teams, and mentors junior engineers. The ideal candidate brings strong PLC and industrial networking expertise, an investigative mindset, and the ability to work effectively across engineering, project, mechanical, electrical, commissioning, and site teams.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop network architectures, drawings, hardware specifications, control narratives, Sequence of Operations (SOO), system reports, and other customer-facing documentation.

  • Program, modify, test, and troubleshoot Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLCs using Studio 5000, including online debugging and field troubleshooting.

  • Develop and support HMI/SCADA systems using Inductive Automation Ignition.

  • Interpret P&IDs, mechanical and electrical schematics, equipment data sheets, and control system documentation to develop practical engineering solutions.

  • Lead and support FAT, startup, commissioning, hardware validation, I/O verification, network verification, and system integration activities.

  • Travel to project sites during critical delivery phases to troubleshoot controls, networking, and integration issues and support commissioning teams.

  • Lead assigned engineering tasks and small-to-mid-sized project scopes, identifying technical risks and delivering solutions on schedule.

  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, commissioning teams, customers, and trade partners throughout project execution.

  • Serve as a technical escalation point and mentor for junior controls engineers.

  • Maintain engineering quality, documentation accuracy, and compliance with Thermo Systems QMS and project requirements.
