The Opportunity
The Director, Strategic Sourcing & Procurement is a leadership role responsible for building Thermo Systems' strategic sourcing and procurement function as the business continues to scale. Reporting into operations leadership, this role will help transform purchasing from a primarily Project Manager-driven, project-level activity into a scalable enterprise capability that leverages Thermo's scale.
This leader will develop supplier strategy, improve commercial buying discipline, strengthen supplier performance, support material availability, improve working capital, and create a more defined and efficient procurement process across project and enterprise spend.
This is a builder role. The successful leader will partner closely with Operations, Project Delivery, Commercial, Engineering, PMO, S&OP, Finance, Legal, IT, HR, Facilities, and regional teams to improve cost, lead time, quality, supplier accountability, and project execution predictability.
What You’ll Do
Strategic Sourcing & Supplier Strategy:
- Build and lead Thermo Systems' strategic sourcing and procurement function, including governance, operating rhythms, supplier engagement, and spend visibility.
- Develop preferred and tiered supplier strategies across key spend categories, with clear expectations for cost, lead time, quality, service, and performance.
- Negotiate supplier agreements that improve pricing, terms, availability, service levels, and long-term value for Thermo Systems.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings, cost avoidance, rebates, supplier consolidation, and commercial leverage as Thermo continues to grow.
Commercial Support & Project Procurement:
- Support Commercial and Technical Sales teams with supplier quotes, budgetary pricing, RFQs, and buyout assumptions during proposal and pre-award activities.
- Centralize and improve project procurement execution, including RFQs, supplier negotiations, PO execution, expediting, and supplier follow-up.
- Partner with Project Managers, Engineering, and Finance to ensure procurement decisions align with technical requirements, project budgets, schedule needs, and customer commitments.
- Support subcontract procurement, installation subcontractor sourcing, contract labor purchasing, and other project-related vendor needs.
- Align procurement activities with Thermo's Delegation of Authority, required reviews, and approval expectations.
Supplier Availability, Local Supply Chain & Working Capital:
- Develop supplier availability strategies, including supplier-held inventory, reserved capacity, blanket agreements, and long-lead material programs.
- Establish local supply chain strategies around Thermo's Dallas and New Jersey hubs to improve cost, delivery, quality, responsiveness, and supplier coordination.
- Partner with S&OP and Operations to use backlog, pipeline, and project demand visibility to inform supplier planning and material readiness.
- Improve working capital through stronger payment terms, reduced down payment requirements, and more disciplined procurement planning.
Enterprise Procurement, Freight & Leasing:
- Manage enterprise procurement where there is clear value, including IT, software, professional services, facilities, freight, general leasing, and other indirect spend.
- Develop standards for freight and logistics purchasing where supplier terms, delivery performance, and expedite costs impact project execution.
- Support general leasing and vendor agreements in partnership with Finance, Legal, IT, HR, Facilities, and functional leaders, as applicable.
- Create practical procurement processes, templates, reporting, and supplier performance tools that improve internal efficiency without slowing project delivery
Leadership & Cross-Functional Partnership:
- Serve as a trusted business partner to executive and functional leaders, balancing strategic sourcing discipline with the speed and flexibility required in a project-based business.
- Lead change management as procurement responsibilities shift from decentralized project-level buying toward a more centralized and strategic model.
- Build strong relationships with supplier partners while maintaining accountability for performance, commercial terms, and business outcomes.
- Develop team capability over time as the function matures, including process ownership, category leadership, project procurement support, and enterprise spend management.
What We’re Looking For
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in supply chain, procurement, business, operations, engineering, finance, or a related discipline; advanced degree or relevant supply chain/procurement certification is a plus.
- 8+ years of progressive experience in strategic sourcing, procurement, supply chain, category management, supplier management, or related operating roles.
- Experience building or scaling procurement processes, supplier strategies, category plans, sourcing standards, or procurement operating models in a growing business.
- Experience supporting project-based, engineering, construction, industrial automation, systems integration, manufacturing, or technical services environments is preferred.
- Experience negotiating supplier agreements, improving payment terms, managing RFQ processes, and driving cost savings or cost avoidance.
- People leadership experience or demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional work through influence is preferred.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Strong sourcing and procurement capability with practical knowledge of supplier strategy, category management, RFQs, negotiations, purchase orders, and supplier performance management.
- Commercially oriented with the ability to improve cost, lead time, quality, working capital, and supplier accountability.
- Strong business partner mindset with the ability to support Project Delivery, Commercial, Engineering, Finance, Legal, S&OP, and enabling functions.
- Analytical and process-oriented, with the ability to use spend data, supplier performance data, and project demand visibility to drive better decisions.
- Effective communicator and change leader who can build alignment, influence stakeholders, and implement practical processes without overcomplicating the business.
- Hands-on builder mindset with sound judgment, ownership, prioritization, and follow-through.
